The Argentine lawyer is being held in Yare III prison, and it has not yet been confirmed that he is alive.
The case of Germán Giuliani, an Argentine lawyer detained in Venezuela, is once again in the spotlight. Eleven months after his arrest, his wife, Virginia Rivero, released a video demanding information about her husband’s condition and calling for his immediate release. The context behind her message is serious: a riot in the Yare prison, where Giuliani is being held, left at least five people dead.
“In recent hours, information has circulated about a riot and a massacre in Yare, where my husband is. After more than 24 hours of silence, the government confirmed five deaths in that riot, but families waiting outside the detention center fear the number is higher. Right now, I know nothing about my husband,” Rivero said, visibly distressed in her testimony.
The video was shared by Elisa Trotta on social media. She is a founding member of the Foro Argentino por la Defensa de la Democracia (FADD), an organization that has followed Giuliani’s case from the beginning and has called for his release.
Rivero’s message not only points to the insecurity inside the prison, but also to the exhaustion accumulated over nearly a year.
“Today marks 11 months since his detention. 11 months since he was torn from his family. 11 months that he hasn’t been home. 11 months that my children have been without their father. 11 months that we’ve been fighting every single day, and we no longer know what to do or who to ask for help so Germán can come home,” she said.
Rivero firmly defended Giuliani’s innocence:
“He is a good man, he is innocent, not a criminal. He is a lawyer, he helps people, and he has nothing to do with what he is being accused of.”
