The new escalation of the conflict in Iran has once again brought attention to the fate of political prisoners held in the country’s prisons. Among them, once again, the name most closely connected to the Piedmont region is that of Ahmadreza Djalali, the Swedish-Iranian scientist detained since 2016 in Evin Prison in Tehran.
In light of the worsening situation in recent weeks, the Radical Association Adelaide Aglietta of Turin recently sent an open letter to the president of the regional council of Piedmont asking for a flash mob to be organized in front of Palazzo Lascaris to demand the release of Djalali and all political prisoners detained in Iranian prisons.
The association recalls that the regional council has already supported in the past the international campaign for the scientist’s release, promoted by Amnesty International and also supported by the University of Eastern Piedmont, where Djalali lived and taught for three years.
In light of developments in the war and the news coming from Iran, the organizers are now calling for a new public mobilization involving regional council members, the regional government led by Alberto Cirio, the academic authorities in Novara, the associations of the Regional Council’s Human and Civil Rights Committee, and citizens.
