The doctor, who for three years worked as a researcher at the University of Eastern Piedmont, has been in the same prison where Cecilia Sala is now detained since 2016
In the same Evin prison in Tehran where Cecilia Sala is being held is Iranian scientist with a Swedish passport Ahmadreza Djalali, an honorary citizen of Novara, where he had worked for three years, from 2012 to 2015, as a researcher at Crimedim (Interdepartmental Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Assistance and Global Health at the University of Eastern Piedmont). Ahmad was arrested in April 2016 during a visit to his parents in Tehran, and sentenced to death for “corruption on the ground” after a trial that Amnesty International has consistently argued was grossly unfair and tainted by confessions extracted through torture.
Dr. Djalali has been a prisoner of the Iranian regime for nearly 3200 days now and is in deteriorating health. The academic suffers from cardiac arrhythmia, anemia, and hypertension, for which he has been denied timely and adequate access to health care.
