Alaa Abdel Fattah has ended his hunger strike after President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi instructed authorities to review a petition from the National Council for Human Rights requesting a presidential pardon for him and six others, according to a family source who spoke to Al-Manassa.
The source, who requested anonymity, said Alaa was informed of the Council’s appeal and ended his strike in the middle of last week, notifying the prison administration.
Last Tuesday, President El-Sisi directed the relevant authorities to examine the petition submitted by the National Council for Human Rights regarding a possible presidential pardon for several prisoners, including activist Alaa Abdel Fattah.
On Monday, the Council had submitted a “humanitarian appeal” to President El-Sisi, urging him to grant a pardon to a number of inmates, among them Alaa Abdel Fattah. In a statement, the Council said:
“In line with our constitutional and legal role, and recognizing Your Excellency’s sincere, paternal approach, we appeal for consideration of certain humanitarian cases. Families of some prisoners have reached out to us, asking for the release of their loved ones, particularly given the serious humanitarian and health challenges they face that require the presence of their relatives.”
