Prominent political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah has resumed his hunger strike in protest against what he described as “a new deception by Sisi’s government,” after the authorities broke their promise to release him following a wave of demonstrations recently organized in front of Egyptian embassies in several world capitals demanding his freedom.
This step has once again brought his case to the forefront of public debate, amid human rights concerns for his deteriorating health after years of imprisonment and a series of prolonged hunger strikes over the past decade.
Unfulfilled Promises
In recent months, media and human rights reports indicated that government officials hinted at the possibility of Abdel Fattah’s release as part of “steps to calm popular anger,” especially after mounting international calls on Cairo to free prisoners of conscience.
These leaks followed protests in front of Egyptian embassies in London and Paris, where demonstrators raised banners condemning arbitrary detention and accusing the Egyptian government of misleading the international community.
But according to his family and lawyers, these promises were nothing more than attempts to absorb pressure, as no tangible action has been taken so far.
