“I assure you that I am strong. I will hold on until the day of my release,” said the 46-year-old aid worker in a phone call with his parents a few days ago.
The case of Alberto Trentini could reach a turning point by the end of the month. There now appears to be a real prospect for the release of the Italian aid worker who has been detained in Venezuela for eleven months. On Sunday, October 19, several delegates of President Nicolás Maduro may travel to Rome to attend the canonization ceremony at the Vatican for the first two Venezuelan saints. Although the delegation’s arrival has not yet been officially confirmed, it could represent an important opportunity for them to meet with Italian authorities and discuss the Trentini case.
Tajani’s optimism
“Thank you to everyone who stands by me. Please, Mom and Dad, take care of yourselves. I assure you that I am strong. I will hold on until the day of my release.”
These were the words that the 46-year-old aid worker shared with his parents, Armanda Colusso and Ezio, during a phone call a few days ago, as the Trentini family reported.
On September 26, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also spoke by phone with Trentini’s mother, assuring her that the government is working every day to bring Alberto home. Then, on October 5, during the first episode of the TV program Che Tempo Che Fa, Armanda Colusso told host Fabio Fazio what Meloni had said to her:
“This time, I was the one who requested the call because the silence over the past few days was leaving me anxious. She [Meloni] was available; we spoke, and she promised her commitment — to help and to take the lead in securing Alberto’s release. I was satisfied because she made that promise to Italy and to the world.”
