Today marks five years since Swedish publisher Gui Minhai was sentenced to ten years in prison in China, following his abduction during a vacation in Thailand. Soon, he will have spent a decade imprisoned without a fair trial. “The last time I received any information about my father was seven years ago,” says Angela Gui.
On the anniversary of the Chinese ruling against publisher and prisoner of conscience Gui Minhai, his daughter Angela Gui is calling for stronger action from Sweden, the EU, and other democracies to secure his release:
– The last time I received any information about my father was seven years ago. Since China, in violation of international conventions, has completely denied the Swedish Foreign Ministry consular access, we do not even know if he is still alive. As his daughter, I am deeply worried about his health, especially in light of what we know about the torture and abuse that occur in Chinese prisons, says Angela Gui in a press statement from Reporters Without Borders.
– The politically motivated sentence against my father and his continued imprisonment is a clear signal from China that the regime’s will stands above both the law and press freedom. It has also paved the way for the worsening situation in Hong Kong, where over 1,900 people are now imprisoned for political reasons. Sweden, the EU, and other democracies must take stronger action to bring my father home, not least to defend our values at a time when freedom of expression is under threat from multiple directions.
