Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino has demanded the release of gendarme Nahuel Gallo, a victim of enforced disappearance in Venezuela for more than a year.
The case of the Enforced Disappearance of Nahuel Gallo in Venezuela has reached a new level of diplomatic urgency and international attention. Argentina’s foreign minister, Diana Mondino, has raised her country’s voice to demand the immediate release of gendarme Nahuel Gallo, who has been subjected to arbitrary detention without formal charges on Venezuelan territory for more than a year. This incident, which marks a troubling milestone in bilateral relations and in the protection of human rights, continues to be a priority for Argentine diplomacy. Gallo’s situation is a stark reminder of the persistent challenges in the region.
The Argentine gendarme, a member of the National Gendarmerie, was reported as forcibly disappeared on December 12, 2022. His last known location was the city of Maturín, capital of Monagas state, in eastern Venezuela. Since that day, uncertainty has surrounded his whereabouts, generating anguish and desperation within his family, especially his father, Rafael Gallo, who has tirelessly called for answers and justice. The lack of transparency in this process is a major concern for all involved, highlighting the complexity of the Enforced Disappearance of Nahuel Gallo.
According to available information and complaints filed by the Argentine side, Nahuel Gallo is currently being held at the facilities of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN), popularly known as “El Helicoide,” in the city of Caracas. Most alarmingly, despite the time that has passed, no formal charges have been brought against him, nor has he been granted access to a fair and transparent judicial process, which constitutes a serious violation of his fundamental rights. Such actions undermine confidence in the rule of law.
ARGENTINA’S FIRM POSITION
Foreign Minister Mondino has forcefully expressed the stance of the Argentine government, which has closely followed this painful case since its outset. Speaking on behalf of her country, the diplomat has not only recalled the grave situation facing Nahuel Gallo but has also emphasized the importance of respecting international human rights norms, which are universal and binding on all nations. The demand for Gallo’s release is not merely a diplomatic matter, but a foremost humanitarian issue.
Argentine authorities have undertaken multiple efforts to address the Enforced Disappearance of Nahuel Gallo. These include submitting an official note to the Venezuelan government requesting detailed information on the status and circumstances of the gendarme’s detention, as well as demanding his immediate release. In addition, meetings have been held with Nahuel Gallo’s family, offering them support and reaffirming the Argentine administration’s commitment to resolving this case.
