The Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province announced on Tuesday that an Austrian citizen was released from Urmia Prison and handed over to the Austrian ambassador in Iran.
Justice Naser Atabati cited “committing crimes” as the reason for the Austrian citizen’s arrest. Mehr news agency reported that Christian Weber, an Austrian national, was released due to what it called “Islamic kindness.”
The agency also reported that Wolf Dietrich Heim, the Austrian ambassador to Iran, visited Naser Atabati’s office to express gratitude for Weber’s release.
Christian Weber, 26 at the time of his arrest, had traveled to Iran following a romantic heartbreak, but he was charged with “espionage” and “trafficking deadly weapons.”
Why did Christian Weber come to Iran?
In September 2022, amid nationwide protests and a crackdown on demonstrators, the Islamic Republic arrested the young Austrian. News of his detention remained undisclosed for almost five months.
Finally, on February 21, 2023, Austria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iran had sentenced Weber to seven and a half years in prison on espionage charges.
According to a report by the newspaper OE24, quoting his mother, Weber had been attempting to drive from Europe to India in a white golf car to clear his mind but was detained by Iranian authorities at the border before even entering the country.
It appeared that Iran seized the opportunity to “take hostage” a European citizen at a time when foreign tourists in Iran were nearly non-existent. Following warnings by European governments to avoid travel to Iran due to the risk of arbitrary arrests and the downing of a Ukrainian plane by IRGC missiles, the number of foreign visitors to the country had sharply declined.
But why did Christian Weber come to Iran? His mother explained to OE24: “Christian was not in a good mental state. He was deeply disappointed – he had failed an important physics exam, lost money in a bad Bitcoin investment, and his relationship with his girlfriend was unstable. He wanted to travel to clear his mind.”
