Numerous German citizens are in foreign prisons, and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock seems to have only limited options for action. Many of these people are experiencing dramatic fates: they are in prison, often without consular assistance, and in some cases are victims of arbitrary justice in unjust states. Here are their terrible backgrounds:
German prisoners are used as leverage
German citizens are used as leverage in negotiations with the Federal Republic of Germany – be it for money, political concessions or the lifting of sanctions. The Federal Foreign Office under the leadership of Annalena Baerbock (43, Greens) is facing major challenges. But its diplomatic efforts are often limited. The case of the imprisoned German-Cuban Luis Frómeta Compte (61) from Dresden is just one example among many, as these other cases of Germans imprisoned abroad show.
German woman imprisoned in Hungary
Maja T. from Berlin, for example, is accused of attacking neo-Nazis in Budapest in February 2023. After she was arrested in Berlin in December, she was initially remanded in custody. Hungary then issued a European arrest warrant. The case is now even before the Federal Constitutional Court. Although the court prohibited her extradition in June 2024, Maja T. had already been extradited to Hungary via Austria. She has been in custody ever since.
