In a July 2024 interview, Darian discussed the struggle of having his father Shahab, unlawfully detained in Iran since 2016. He expressed his disappointment with the U.S. government, which over the past 8 years, has treated Shahab and his family unfairly and unjustly. Darian also mentioned Shahab’s confinement conditions and how each day is a struggle for him and his family.

How are you and your family coping with Shahab’s prolonged unlawful imprisonment?
We are disappointed and feel left behind and neglected. 

How do you deal with and overcome frustration when things don’t seem to move forward?

Just by dealing with it on a day-to-day basis. Everyday is a struggle. 

How do you stay hopeful and lift Shahab’s spirits?

He is strong. He is the one who lifts our spirits when he gets the chance to call which is not nearly often enough. 

What are the toughest parts and main challenges of trying to free Shahab?

Our family feels that the American government did not care about us, about their own citizens. They treated us unfairly and unjustly. A treatment unworthy of a family of American citizens.

Are you getting the support you need from organizations, the media, and others? How could they help more?

Mr. Poblete has always stayed in contact and been supportive and of course, you guys.

How frequently are you able to talk to your dad? How is he holding up?

Once every few weeks and like I said he is strong

Is there any recent news about Shahab’s case?

News from Shahab is that the population held inside the ward he is in has increased and he is having to live in a smaller and tighter space than ever before. The conditions are not good at all. He suffers a lot and we are worried for him.

Just please keep us in mind. I hope the American government one day decides to treat all hostages with equity.
