A cross-party appeal has been launched for the release of Alberto Trentini, the Italian aid worker detained in Caracas for over a year without any formal charges being brought against him. His only allowances have been three short phone calls and one consular visit — concessions also granted to other detainees. The appeal was signed by 39 Italian MEPs from the PD, M5S, AVS, and FdI, calling for every available channel to be opened in compliance with human rights, international law, and Article 11 of the Italian Constitution.
“With a spirit that looks to peace as a shared horizon,” the text reads, “we address an appeal to the authorities of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. With respect for the sovereignty of the country, but with equal firmness in recalling the universal values of human rights, we ask for an act of humanity: the release of Alberto Trentini. A gesture of clemency and openness, in this moment marked by regional tensions and threats of military escalation in areas near the Venezuelan coast, would carry deep significance. It would be perceived,” the appeal continues, “as a sign of willingness to engage in dialogue, a contribution to building a calmer and more cooperative climate, a step that responds to a call for peace with a concrete act of peace.
