The Argentine representative to the Permanent Council demanded concrete actions to allow the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights access to Venezuelan territory and to maintain international oversight of cases of detention and enforced disappearance.
Nearly a year after the arrest of Germán Darío Giuliani—the latest Argentine citizen detained by the Venezuelan regime—Argentina renewed its call before the OAS Permanent Council for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela and for a delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to be allowed into the country.
During the regular meeting held this Wednesday in Washington, D.C., the humanitarian situation in Venezuela was discussed at the request of Argentina and other delegations. Argentina’s representative, Carlos Cherniak, insisted that the issue remain on the organization’s agenda. “This organization must be the voice of the voiceless wherever systematic human rights violations occur,” he told the Council.
