The family of a British couple imprisoned in Iran have urged Sir Keir Starmer to personally intervene to secure the release of their loved ones. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both aged 52, were on a round the world motorbike trip when their relatives lost contact with them four days into a visit to the Islamic Republic in January.
Iranian state media announced in February that the couple had been arrested on espionage charges, which they and their family deny. Mr Foreman was transferred from Fashafoyeh prison to Iran’s notorious Evin jail while Mrs Foreman is being held in Qarchak women’s prison.
Her oldest son, Joe Bennett, 31, told the Daily Express the family has concerns about the “inhumane” conditions they are being held in, the toll being separated will take on the loving couple and adequacy of government action.
He said: “The people who can really make a difference are (Foreign Secretary) David Lammy and (Prime Minister) Keir Starmer. As leaders of the country they command the most respect. We just want to know they are on board with wanting to get mum and Craig home.”
Mr Bennett added: “I have no doubt about the Foreign Office’s intentions to get them home, but if you want anything taken seriously the leaders of a country are the ones heard the most and taken the most seriously.”
