In an interview with Newsweek Argentina, Vanesa said that her brother is “absolutely innocent” and called on the Argentine government and the international community to intensify their efforts. “It’s not enough for us that they say he is fine. Germán is still there, and we have no proof,” she said.
Argentine lawyer Germán Darío Giuliani has been detained in Venezuela for more than nine months, and his family says that the uncertainty surrounding his situation has become a form of constant torment. While some foreign detainees have been released in recent days, Germán remains imprisoned in the maximum-security facility Internado Judicial Yare II, without clear information about the charges against him or the real status of his legal proceedings.
Giuliani had traveled to the Caribbean country for work and was arrested between May 21 and May 23, 2025, by authorities of the regime of Nicolás Maduro, who initially linked him to crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking—accusations his family categorically rejects.
“My brother is still detained in Yare II. The charges against him, the conditions of his detention, and the status of his judicial process are unknown. His human rights and his right to due process have been completely violated,” the woman emphasized.
Communication with Germán, according to his family, is minimal and does not really allow them to confirm how he is doing. Vanesa explained that “the conversations we have are very brief—just a few minutes, with a guard in front of him and on speakerphone. So I have no certainty and I can’t fully believe what he says.”
During those short conversations, the Argentine lawyer tries to reassure his family, although for them it is impossible to know whether what he says reflects reality. “He always says the same thing: that he’s fine, that he’s strong. He always tries to reassure us, but the truth is that I have no way to verify it. I haven’t even seen a picture of him.”
