The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, released his latest report on Venezuela this Friday, June 27, in which he called for an end to arbitrary detentions in the country and demanded the release of Rocío San Miguel, Javier Tarazona, Carlos Julio Rojas, and Eduardo Torres.
“In light of the ongoing human rights challenges in Venezuela, I urge the immediate and unconditional release of all those arbitrarily detained, including human rights defenders Rocío San Miguel, Javier Tarazona, Carlos Julio Rojas, and Eduardo Torres,” the official stated.
Türk also called for an immediate end to enforced disappearances and incommunicado detentions, and for consular assistance to be granted to detained foreign nationals. He further urged the repeal of all legislation that contributes to restricting civic and democratic space.
“I am concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Venezuela. Since May 1, 2024, there have been arbitrary detentions, violations of due process, and enforced disappearances, amid ongoing allegations of torture and ill-treatment,” lamented the head of the UN Human Rights Office.
He also noted that, in the lead-up to parliamentary and regional elections, authorities announced the detention of around 70 people — including opposition figures, human rights defenders, and 17 foreign nationals — accused of belonging to a terrorist group.
