The body of Jamshid Sharmahd, a 69-year-old Iranian-German dual national, has been transferred to Germany, Iranian media reported on Wednesday.
Sharmahd died in Iranian custody in October last year, with judiciary officials initially saying he had been executed.
Iranian authorities accused Sharmahd of involvement in a 2008 “terrorist operation” in Shiraz, alleging that he received “complex support and protection” from Western intelligence services while living abroad.
His family has rejected these accusations, maintaining that he was merely a spokesperson for the group and had no connection to attacks in Iran.
Sharmahd was abducted by Iranian agents in 2020 while visiting the United Arab Emirates and forcibly transported to Iran.
In February 2023, he was sentenced to death for allegedly “threatening national security.”
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, repeatedly raised concerns about the case, citing a lack of due process, his abduction, and reports of mistreatment.
