Swedish-Iranian Citizen Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali Has Been in Prison in Iran for 3,500 Days. Human Rights Advocates Around the World Call for His Immediate Release.
24 November 2025 marks 3,500 days of unjust imprisonment for Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian scholar, physician, and disaster medicine expert who was sentenced to death in Iran on fabricated espionage charges in 2017. Since then, he has lived under the daily threat of execution.
His life is hanging in the balance.
We are deeply concerned by reports of his deteriorating health. He survived a heart attack in Evin Prison this past May.
Dr. Djalali’s case epitomizes the Iranian regime’s weaponization of the judiciary, its systematic use of executions, hostage diplomacy, and escalating gross human rights violations. In recent months, the Iranian regime has intensified its campaign of repression, increasing executions and death threats against critics, journalists, foreign nationals, dual nationals, and their families living abroad.
These actions constitute a brazen assault on human rights and a grave violation of international justice.
As international advocates for the case of Dr. Djalali, we urge the international community, particularly the G7, the European Union, and the Swedish government, to act without delay in pressing for his immediate and unconditional release through all appropriate channels.
Time is running out.
