“I’m trying to reintegrate into society,” said the gendarme who was jailed by the Chávez regime in the El Rodeo 1 prison. Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, and the head of the National Gendarmerie accompanied him at the event.
After being released in Venezuela, Nahuel Gallo spoke for the first time this afternoon about his detention in El Rodeo 1 prison and described his first days back in Argentina.
“I am Nahuel Gallo. I know it’s not easy to be here in front of you. I asked to speak. I’ve seen very little, I have very little information, I’m processing everything. But it was I who asked for a moment to give my statement,” the gendarme began during a press conference in Buenos Aires.
He also assured that he is in good health and continues to undergo medical checkups. “I’m trying to reintegrate into society. I’m calm, with my family,” he said.
“El Rodeo 1 is not a good place. It’s a place of extreme psychological torture and not something pleasant to talk about right now. Just thinking about it makes me hesitate,” he said about the prison where he was held.
He specified that there are still 24 foreigners waiting to be released: “There they don’t tell you what you’re going to do or what’s going to happen. It’s uncertainty and constant thoughts about what might happen. Thank God, I had a lot of mental strength. My son was the only thing that kept me strong.”
“It’s not easy to be cut off from communication. It’s not easy to have lost your freedom unjustly and be accused of crimes. We foreigners had no visits or phone calls. I am still locked up — until the foreigners at El Rodeo are freed, I am not free,” he stressed.
