Today marks the ninth anniversary of the disappearance of Swedish citizen Gui Minhai from his holiday home in Thailand. Amnesty is calling for Gui Minhai’s immediate release and return home to his loved ones!
Gui Minhai was a publisher who stood up for freedom and freedom of expression. He was first detained on October 17, 2015 when he disappeared from his holiday home in Thailand. At the time, he was running a publishing house and bookstore, Causeway Bay Books, in Hong Kong. Both the publishing house and the bookstore were known to publish and sell books critical of the regime, many of which are banned in China.
Gui has not been allowed to have contact with his family or his legal counsel since 2018. In February 2020, Chinese authorities announced that Gui Minhai had been sentenced to 10 years in prison, without a chance of a fair trial.
