The assembly of Palazzo Cabrino expresses concern for the scientist detained in Iran for over eight years and urges the Mayor to take action for his release
The case of Swedish-Iranian scientist Ahmadreza Djalali, an honorary citizen of Novara where he worked for three years before being arrested in 2016 and sentenced to death in 2017, came back to the forefront of the city council today. With a unanimous vote, the assembly of Palazzo Cabrino approved a motion proposed by opposition groups, in which the City Council of Novara “expresses concern for the fate of the researcher who made a heartfelt appeal through Amnesty International on his 53rd birthday after 8 years and 9 months of detention” and “urges the Mayor to take all possible actions that could lead to the release of the researcher and to ensure better detention conditions, including through contacts with Italian and Iranian authorities.”
