Uruguay – Grupo R Multimedio, July 20, 2025
Uruguayan Fabián Buglione, who had been detained in Venezuela since October 2024, has been released. Buglione is now in the United States, where he resides. His release was part of a broader prisoner exchange that also included French-American Lucas Hunter, U.S. Navy sailor Wilbert Joseph Castañeda Gómez, as well as Jorge Marcelo Vargas, Renzo Castillo, and Jonathan Pagan González. According to diplomatic sources, this release was carried out as part of a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Venezuela. The government of El Salvador was involved in the negotiations.
A total of 252 Venezuelans who had been deported from the United States in March and held at the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT), a maximum-security prison in El Salvador, were sent back to Venezuela. In exchange, the government of Nicolás Maduro released American citizens detained in Venezuela, as well as an unspecified number of Venezuelans whom Washington considers political prisoners.
Detained for 9 Months
Fabián Buglione, 48, was detained in Venezuela for over nine months. He has lived in the United States since 2001 with his family—his wife and two children—in New York. He emigrated from Uruguay and founded a business specializing in security camera installation.
