Proposal for Parliamentary Decision
The Parliament supports the points raised in the motion that Sweden should actively work for the release of Swedish citizen Ahmadreza Djalali from Iranian prison, and hereby conveys this to the Government.
Justification
Swedish citizen Ahmadreza Djalali has been imprisoned in Iran since 2016. Djalali is a physician and researcher at the Karolinska Institute. In 2016, he was arrested, sentenced to death in 2017 on charges of espionage, and the sentence was upheld in 2018.
The case is considered by the UN to be a politically motivated action by Iran, and Djalali is regarded as a prisoner of conscience. His health condition is critical, and Sweden needs to actively work to secure Djalali’s release from Iranian detention and allow him to be reunited with his family in Sweden.
