The Foreign Minister: “They are political prisoners of the regime, not criminals. We are working at both the political and diplomatic levels.”
“We are closely following the situation in Venezuela and that of our fellow citizens detained there. We are doing everything possible to get them out of the prisons in Caracas,” said Antonio Tajani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, speaking from Canada on the sidelines of the G7.
He added: “They are political detainees, not criminals. This is an issue very close to our hearts. We are working at the political and diplomatic levels. In every possible way, we will try to bring home the Italian detainees — including Trentini, who has been in prison for a year, and it’s still unclear what the regime intends to do.”
Alberto Trentini, an Italian aid worker in Venezuela, has been imprisoned in Caracas since November 15, 2024.
