“Who knows what Alberto must think.” The aid worker has been detained in Venezuela for 13 months.
“Every morning, when a new day begins, I ask myself what he must think of his country, which seems to have abandoned him.”
A cry of pain and a clear plea for help from Armanda Colusso Trentini, the mother of the aid worker detained in Venezuela since November 15, 2024. In a voice message sent to Tutta la città ne parla on Rai Radio 3, she tried to shine a light on her son’s situation: “Alberto has now been in prison for 13 months, and we cannot find peace.” Then her appeal: “I thank the programme,” she said, “and everyone who is joining us in calling on our government to take decisive action to bring Alberto home, because every additional day of detention is unbearable for us.”
Alberto Trentini, 46, had travelled to Venezuela in October 2024 to work with Humanity & Inclusion, an NGO that provides assistance to people with disabilities in around 60 countries. In mid-November, the news reached the family from overseas: Alberto had been arrested by Venezuelan authorities, without any clear information about the charges against him. From that point on, the ordeal began.
The Italian aid worker remains detained at the El Rodeo I penitentiary in Caracas, where he is being held without a clear formalisation of the charges against him. However, according to Trentini himself, he has been accused of conspiracy and terrorism.
