The Piedmont Regional Council is taking action for Alberto Trentini, the humanitarian worker detained for seven months in Venezuela.
The chamber unanimously approved two motions calling for the man’s release.
The first signatory of a motion is Regional Council President Davide Nicco, committing the president and the regional council “to urge the government to urgently intervene, with every useful initiative, to ensure that the request for the release of Alberto Trentini and the other Italians currently detained in Venezuela for no known reason is supported in every institutional and international forum.”
“After a year of detention,” Nicco stated, “Piedmont can no longer remain indifferent to cases that call into question fundamental human rights. Our assembly, which established the Committee for Human and Civil Rights, has always been committed to defending the freedom, justice, and dignity of every individual.” The motion refers to “the grave human rights situation in Venezuela,” where, in addition to Alberto Trentini, other Italian-Venezuelan citizens are being detained.
