In a new development in the case of imprisoned Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, an Egyptian court decided on Monday, July 21, to remove his name from the terrorism lists, after it had been included since September 2019.
Human rights lawyer Khaled Ali, who represents Alaa, announced that the Egyptian Criminal Court based its decision on intelligence reports indicating that Abdel Fattah had not continued any activity in support of a terrorist organization. He noted that the ruling entails the termination of all legal consequences associated with being listed on terrorism lists, including travel bans, asset freezes, bans on holding public office, and other penalties.
Abdel Fattah’s case has been the subject of ongoing tension in recent months. Just a week before the court’s decision, his mother, Egyptian academic Laila Soueif, ended the hunger strike she had begun in September of last year, demanding the release of her son, who has been imprisoned for more than five years on charges of “spreading false news.”
