On Monday, the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) Foundation staged large-scale wall projections on London’s Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament with a clear message for Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of his trip to Beijing this week: Bring British citizen Jimmy Lai home.
The projections highlighted the awful reality of how long Lai has been languishing in a Hong Kong jail: 1,854 days.
“The prime minister has a golden opportunity: by securing Jimmy Lai’s release during his Beijing visit, he could return to London as a hero for democracy, showing that the UK stands unwaveringly for its citizens and for freedom of expression worldwide,” CFHK Foundation UK and Europe Director Mark Sabah said. “It really is that simple. Doesn’t he want that victory?”
Lai was arrested on Aug. 10, 2020, and, on Dec. 15, 2025, was convicted by three handpicked judges, having been denied his constitutionally protected right to a jury trial, for “colluding with foreign forces” and for “conspiracy to publish seditious material.”
