Relatives of Lindsay and Craig Foreman ready to turn to White House for help securing release from Tehran
The family of a British couple detained in Iran’s most notorious prison may turn to Donald Trump’s administration for help in securing their release.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman were arrested in January on suspicion of espionage while driving through the country as part of an around-the-world motorcycle tour.
Mrs Foreman, a 52-year-old therapist from East Sussex, was previously detained in Qarchak prison, a former cattle farm 40 miles south of Tehran that has since been converted into a detention facility for women which former inmates have described as a sewage-infested, windowless “hellhole”.
She was transferred to Evin prison on Thursday to join her husband, also 52, after three women in Qarchak died in the space of 10 days from being denied essential medical care.
Evin prison is one of the Islamic republic’s most symbolically important detention facilities, where prominent activists, foreigners, journalists and dissidents have been held for decades.
‘Absolutely crazy’ charges
The couple’s family have said the charges of espionage levelled against them are “absolutely crazy” and have maintained their innocence throughout the nine months of their detention.
Joe Bennett, Mrs Foreman’s son, said that they were considering turning to Mr Trump for help after the president promised to replicate the success of his peace deal in Gaza with Tehran.
Mr Bennett said his family were buoyed by the renewed stability in the Middle East and suggested Mr Trump could be instrumental in securing his mother and stepfather’s release.
Asked if they would consider turning to Mr Trump and his administration for assistance, Mr Bennett replied: “As a family we would be open to exploring that [to] get the safe and urgent return of my mum and Craig home. We would be naive not to explore all opportunities, or at least listen to what’s possible.
